Over 500 Killed In Road Traffic Accidents In Third Quarter Of 2021

The Zambia Police Service has disclosed that the country in the third quarter of 2021 recorded 8,059 road traffic accidents out of which 469 were fatal road traffic accidents and 585 persons were killed.

This represents an increase by 303 road traffic accidents compared to 7,756 road traffic accidents recorded during the same period last year in which 483 persons were killed.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says 756 were serious road traffic accidents in which 1,345 persons were seriously injured, 1,511 were slight injury road traffic accidents were 2,216 persons were slightly injured while 5,323 were recorded as damage only road traffic accidents.

Mr. Hamoonga says Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents with 4,350 followed by Copperbelt Province with 1,292 accidents.

In a statement, Mr. Hamoonga has attributed the increase in road traffic accidents to low compliance levels on the part of most road users especially motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as revealed by causes of the accidents.
