NUSFAZ PREDICTS LOWER HARVESTS FOR THE 2021-2022 FARMING SEASON

By Michael Kaluba

The National Union for Small Scale Farmers In Zambia-NUSFAZ- has predicted that Zambia may fall short of a bumper harvest post this farming season due to the inconsistent and unfavourable rainy season.

NUSFAZ Executive Director Ebony Lolozhi says Zambia may not have a bumper harvest because the dry spells and excessive rains in some parts of the country will compel most farmers to opt for early maturing seed varieties which have a relatively lower output than the late maturing varieties.
Mr. Lolozhi in an interview with Phoenix News has however, lamented the losses incurred by farmers who planted early at the sight of the first rains only for a prolonged dry spell to destroy their plants.

He adds that while not all is lost, the level of production may not be as high as previously but is optimistic that the rain season will now be favourable going forward to allow for farmers to grow their produce.
