By Chileshe Mwango

Workers at the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research -NISIR- under the Ministry of Higher Education have protested the non-payment of their two months salaries.

A check at the NISIR offices along airport road by Phoenix News found the workers mobilizing to protest against the continuous delay and non-payment of their July, August and now September salaries by management.

And in an interview with Phoenix News, University of Zambia and allied workers union –UNZAAWU- NISIR Branch Chairperson, Mwape Musonda said payment of salaries at NISIR has been erratic the last 11 months.

Mr. Musonda says it has become a tendency that for workers to be paid, meetings have to be held between management and the union which he says should not be the case.

He has wondered why civil servants from parastatal organizations under the same Ministry of Higher Education are being paid while they remain the only neglected.

The workers have since given management 48 hours to be paid their salaries failure to which they will down tools.

But when contacted for a comment, NISIR Acting Director, Dr. Hilda Silavwe said management has no comment on the matter.
