NCC Records Increase In Number Of Contractor Registrations In 2020 Despite Covid-19 Pandemic

The National Council For Construction-NCC-has registered a total of 9305 in 2020 slightly exceeding the numbers recorded by the end of 2019 despite the covid-19 pandemic which affected various sectors.

The council has however indicated that despite recording an increase in registrations, it recorded a reduction in the number of foreign contractors this year due to the covid-19 pandemic, resulting in the engagement of more local contractors with the number of certificates issued to local contractors standing at 96 percent.

Speaking during a media breakfast for road agencies in Lusaka today, NCC executive director Mathew Ngulube said explained that the registrations included 3335 general building and housing, 3124 general roads and earthworks and 1261, general civil engineering works among others with road sector being one of the largest categories at 34 percent.

At the same event, national road fund agency director and chief executive officer Wallace Mumba disclosed that the agency will soon receive an initial amount of K500 million from the k4 billion covid-19 stimulus package to the road sector aimed at stimulating local businesses through small and medium scale road contractors.

Meanwhile, Engineer Mumba has indicated that as of 30th September 2020, the agency collected a total of K1.04 billion from the 37 toll collection points representing a 16 percent underperformance owing to reduced traffic volumes in the first and second quarters of 202 due to covid-19.

Meanwhile, road development agency-RDA- director and chief executive officer George Manyele highlighted the progress made in various projected being undertaken by the agency.
