Mushiba Ward Councillor Appeals Early Clearing Of River Channels To Avoid Floods

By Chileshe Mwango

A Civic Leader in Luapula Constituency has charged that flooding in the area will never stop for as long as government fails to clear river channels before the onset of rainy season.

Mushiba ward Councillor Didacius Mutakati says the usual practice of clearing river channels during the rainy season does not avert the occurrence of flooding hence the need to conduct the exercise early enough.

Mr Mutakati tells Phoenix News in an interview that people in the area are not happy that they have to ask for relief every rain season when they can cultivate their own and feed surrounding areas if only flooding is avoided.

Last year, blocked water channels caused Lunga district in Luapula province to flood, impacting on agriculture as 38,000 people had houses and crop fields submerged following a continuous downpour.
