MMD Suspends Copperbelt Official
The opposition MMD has with immediate effect suspended for a period of 1 year its member Peter Phiri for masquerading as its Copperbelt Information and Publicity Secretary .
Phiri is said to having been issuing statements to the media without prior permission from the party’s national secretary.
In a letter of suspension dated June 18th, 2016, MMD National Secretary Raphael Nakachinda has explained that, in suspending Mr. Phiri, he has invoked powers vested in him under article 46 (1) of the party’s constitution ready with Disciplinary Regulation of 1993 number (6).
Nakachinda has also informed Phiri that the MMD under the new leadership of Felix Mutati has positioned itself to work with the ruling PF and not the opposition UPND.
He states that this means Phiri’s continued association with the UPND as proven through his press statements is tantamount to abrogation of the standing orders.
Nakachinda notes that this is in terms of the corrective agreement and the resolution of the party’s National Convention held from the 20th to the 22nd of May this year.
He says Phiri is hereby requested to submit to his office an exculpatory statement in writing in defense or lack of it within a period of 10 days from the date of his suspension.
