The accident has prompted management at the mine to suspend all production activities underground except for critical tasks such as water pumping and ventilation.

According to Lubambe Mine Communications Manager, Loice Saili, the accident happened yesterday underground at the Lubambe Copper Mine and tragically resulted in the death of an employee.

Ms Saili has explained that no other employees were injured and that investigations by the mine safety department are underway to establish the cause of the accident.

And Mines Minister Richard Musukwa has regretted that Lubambe Copper Mines which has one of the best safety records in Zambia has started compromising on standards and has called on mine management to quickly develop measures aimed at preventing accidents.

Mr. Musukwa says his Ministry has since sent a team from the mine safety department to investigate the cause of accident and that once concluded, the findings will be made public.
