Lusaka declared cholera free

Lusaka has been declared cholera-free with no deaths of the seven cases that were recorded.

Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya says government declared Lusaka free from the disease after it passed a World Health Organisation (WHO) test of not reporting any new cases within 14 days from the last incident.

Speaking at a media briefing, Dr. Chilufya says 19 days have passed without registering any cholera cases in line with the World Health Organisation recommendations.

He has since commended stakeholders as well as line Ministries in the fight against the pandemic.

He says as of 13th February, 2019, an accumulation of Seven (7) cases were laboratory confirmed two each from Kabanana and Garden, and one each from Chipata SOS, Mtendere and Buseko market.

Dr. Chilufya says all cases presented with severe dehydration due to acute diarrhoea and vomiting and were successfully treated in the Cholera Treatment Centers (CTUs) within the sub-districts in which they reside.

He has also thanked the W.H.O for its continued efforts in securing the health of the population; through provision of Oral Cholera Vaccines, diagnostic tools and consumables, cholera kits, technical support among others.
