Lungu pardons 336 prisoners on Independence Day

Pesident Edgar Lungu has released 336 prisoners in line with the long held tradition of releasing prisoners during national days like Independence Day and African Freedom Day.

Lungu, in exercising his Prerogative of Mercy pursuant to Article 97 (1) of the Constitution of Zambia, CAP 1 of the Laws of Zambia has signed the Order of Release for the prisoners as Zambia commemorates 52 years of self governance.

The commemoration which falls on 24th October, 2016, will see 336 inmates walking out of the prison gates and joining society.

In a statement released to Zambian Eye and signed  by the Minister of Home Affairs, Stephen Kampyongo, government has urged society to accept and help those pardoned to integrate in society once more.

Last year, some sections of society murmured when government released prisoners on national days, saying those released mostly get back to crime and start terrorizing the community.
