Lungu eligible to stand in 2021 – Lifwekelo

Former United Party for National Development (UPND) deputy spokerson, Edwin Lifwekelo has joined the ongoing debate about whether President Edgar Lungu qualifies to seek another term of office in 2021.

Lifwekelo, the ruling Patriotic Front first Secretary General before he defected to former ruling MMD and later UPND says he understands that with the new constitutions, Lungu is eligible to go for another term.

Lifwekelo who resigned from UPND few weeks ago also said he backs the words of  Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) governance advisor, Isaac Mwanza who said that article 106 of the amended constitution opens up  Lungu to having a go at another term since his first term was for late President Michael Sata.

Lifwekelo said Lungu should exercise the option to contest the 2021 elections.

President Lungu serves the remainder of Sata’s term from January 2015 until he emerged victorious in the August 11, 2016.
