Local Timber Industry Under Threat As Tanzanian And Malawian Timber Flood Zambian Market

By Tinkerbel Mwila

Tanzanian and Malawian timber have flooded the Zambian market with saw millers expressing concern that this development is threatening the timber industry.

Zambia National Association for Saw Millers Chairperson Tambushi Mulenga is further concerned that the local market has shifted to purchasing the timber from outside because it is being sold at a cheaper price.

In an interview with Phoenix Business News, Mr. Mulenga explains that one round wood tree is locally costing over K1, 000 while the same tree is being sold three times less by Tanzanian traders; a situation he says could put most local saw millers out of business.

Meanwhile, Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation –ZAFFICO- Acting Director of Plantation Charles Kapoma says it would only stop this trend if it had sufficient timber to offload on the market but however said the company is in the process of engaging its partners in Tanzania.
