Kitwe Youths Protest Over Mineral Rich Slug Dumps Backed

By Michael Kaluba

The Small Scale Miners Association has backed calls by some youths in Kitwe who protested yesterday demanding that the government releases mineral-rich slug dumps to them for empowerment.

Association Spokesperson Samson Mpempulwe tells phoenix news that the protest by the youths is a testament to the widespread unemployment and poverty levels among households on the Copperbelt, especially in Kitwe.

Mr. Mpempulwe has challenged the government to expedite the process to release some of the dumpsites in Kitwe district to youths so that they can contribute to the social-economic development of the country through payment of taxes and job creation.

He argues that with some other dumps in mining towns released to youths, the lot in Kitwe have remained exposed to a life of crime and incarceration in their quest to earn a living through various vices including thefts and attacking unsuspecting residents.
