Kantashi MP Urges Transparency In Debt Acquisition And Management

By Tinkerbel Mwila

Kantanshi Member of Parliament Anthony Mumba says it is not possible for the government to disclose conditions that may have been imposed on Zambia as a result of the recently signed Debt Service Sustainability Initiative –DSSI-.

Mr. Mumba says current existing laws give the executive the privilege to understand conditions of the acquired debt although the constitution mandates the privilege be brought to parliament.

He has since noted the need for the new dawn government to seriously deal with all areas of discomfort regarding debt acquisition and management in order to be more responsive to people’s aspirations.

Mr. Mumba was reacting to demands by some stakeholders for government to make public any conditions that may be imposed on Zambia as a result of the debt service sustainability initiative signed recently.

Mr. Mumba who has welcomed the signing of the DSSI which is meant to suspend Zambia’s debt service payments has however called for legislation to allow the national assembly to debate whether debt should be acquired or not.
