HH and five others taken to Mukobeko Maximum Security Prision

Prison

United Party for National Development Leader Hakainde Hichilema 5 others have been transferred to Mukobeko Maximum Security Prision in Kabwe from Lusaka central Prison.

It now means the accused will be under solitary confinement at Mukobeko Maximum prison where people accused of serious cases such as treason, murder or those who have been convicted of these cases are jailed.

Hichilema and five others are charged with treason, and have so far been in custody for two months.

First president Kenneth Kaunda was remanded at this prison when Frederick Chiluba’s government arrested him on trumped up charges of treason. He was only saved by his Tanzanian counterpart Julius Mwalimu Nyerere who pleaded with Chiluba to have him put under house arrest.

On Thursday, yesterday Principal Resident Magistrate David Simusamba ruled that Hichilema and his co-accused 5 be referred to the High Court as per committal certificate issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to refer the treason case to the High Court for trial.

Hichilema was arrested on April 11, 2017 after a brutal night raid of his residence the previous day. He briefly spent his detention at Lilayi Police College in Lusaka before he was moved to Lusaka Central Correctional Facilities.

His Supporters say the charges are politically motivated aimed at finishing their leader politically.

Hichilema or HH as he is fondly called narrowly lost the elections of 2016 to President Lungu but he has refused to recognise the leadership of Lungu.
