Govts’ Intervention In The Mopani Copper Mine Workers’ Matter With Stanbic Bank A Political Gimmick

By Michael Kaluba

Some of the 2,500 Mopani Copper Mine employees have received the news of governments’ intervention into their matter with Stanbic Bank with mixed feelings as some describe the move as a political gimmick meant to woo them for votes.

The government recently announced that it has secured legal services for over 2,500 Mopani Copper Mine employees who had sued Stanbic Bank for unilaterally increasing interest rates on their personal loans.

But some of the miners tell phoenix news that it is shocking that Mines Minister Richard Musukwa has not been interested in the matter and has only intervened in an election year.

The miners who spoke anonymously to Phoenix News for fear of victimization have also wondered why the unions failed to secure funds for the mineworkers instead of engaging the mines minister to get the legal counsel and have accused the union leadership of acting as cadres and agents of pf propaganda.

The miners have since called for the amending of the Mine Workers Union of Zambia constitution so that the national executive can be voted for by the majority miners as opposed to few delegates.

The miners have also asked the government to take a keen interest in the matter where the lead lawyer for Stanbic Bank, in this case, Eric Silwamba state counsel, is also part of the ZCCM-IH hierarchy which they say has the potential to hinder their justice.
