GOVT URGED TO EXPEDITE PROCESS OF ENACTING ANTI-TORTURE BILL INTO LAW

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes –SACCORD- is calling on government to enact into law the anti-torture bill that has been developed by the Human Rights Commission-HRC and the Zambia Law Development Commission-ZLDC working in partnership with other stakeholders.
SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says the government should also inform the nation on the status of this bill which if enacted into law will help contribute to providing a legal framework that curtails the prevalence of torture and thereby strengthen the country`s human rights record.
And Mr Cheembe is optimistic that the capacity of the newly appointed commissioners at the human rights commission will do the right thing when it comes to promoting, observing and protecting human rights and that the commission will continue working with all key stakeholders in matters of human rights.
He has cited the recent circulating video of some youths being beaten by Zambia Army Officers while being interrogated for issuing derogatory remarks against President Hakainde Hichilema saying this was unfortunate and regrettable.
