GOVT TO IMPOSE PENALTIES ON ENTITIES ILLEGALLY IMPORTING FOODS CONTAINING GMOS

By Balewa Zyuulu

Agriculture Minister Mtolo Phiri says the government will impose serious penalties on entities that will be found importing foods containing genetically modified organism-GMOs.

Mr Phiri tells Phoenix News that the government has not shifted its policy position and its commitments under the Cartagena protocol which requires the precautionary approach to be the guiding principle of any biosafety policy.

He says the ministry is ready to work with other partners to protect the agriculture sector from contamination of biotechnologies.

Mr Phiri says Zambia is forward thinking and will continue to ensure that there is adequate precautionary protection and strong liability and redress to safeguard national economic interests and human and environmental rights.
