Government Hesitant To Engage Millers To Reduce Mealie Meal Prices

By Tinkerbel Mwila

Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo says government will not be pushed to bail out millers in their quest to source for cheaper grain as they were advised earlier on the matter.

Recently, Millers Association of Zambia President Andrew Chintala attributed the upward adjustment in prices of mealie meal on the market which is trading between K130 and K155 per 25kg bag to high maize price which has moved from K110 to K180 per 50kg.

But in an interview with Phoenix News, Mr. Katambo says government through the food reserve agency will only intervene in the current escalating prices of mealie meal once it is satisfied with reasons given for the high mealie meal prices.

Mr. Katambo says the government is reviewing the mealie meal prices and will do everything possible to make the staple food affordable.

And the Minister says the government is shocked that millers have written to his ministry requesting to be allowed to export mealie meal when the price of the commodity on the local market is unstable.
