Food And Nutrition Challenges In Zambia Likely To Continue If The Current High Cost Of Living Is Not Addressed

The Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition Alliance -CSO-SUN- has warned that food and nutrition challenges that the country is facing is likely to continue to be on the increase if serious measures are not taken to tackle the ever-creasing cost of living and mismanagement of resources meant for vulnerable groups such as social cash transfer.

CSO-SUN Country Coordinator Mathews Mhuru has also reiterated that the current economic hardships have the potential to take Zambia back to the old statistics of having over 41 percent of malnutrition prevalence due to food and nutrition insecurities which are on the rise.

Mr. Mhuru in an interview with phoenix news has disclosed that food insecurity in the country is on the rise especially in urban areas due to the increasing cost of living and a lack of liquidity in the economy.

And Mr. Mhuru has challenged President Edgar Lungu to show political will by intervening and acting on the latest auditor general’s report which has revealed high levels of misappropriation of social cash transfer funds.

According to the recent demographic and health survey and ICF international 2014, 1.12 million children, about 40 percent of those under 5 years suffered from chronic malnutrition and stunting while over 420,000 children under 5 years also suffered from acute malnutrition.
