Esther proposes desk for women at Ministry of Lands

First Lady Esther Lungu has proposed the establishment of a desk at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to assist women acquire land and are given land title without any red tape.

Speaking during the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build event in Lusaka’s Bauleni Township, Mrs. Lungu notes that many women cannot afford to secure their land documents due to the bureaucracy in the issuance of title deeds.

She has also noted that many women are not aware of their entitlement to 50 percent of land in Zambia.

Mrs. Lungu has committed to continue supporting programmes such as the Women’s Build which is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity Zambia and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank with partners like Lafarge, MMI Steel among others

She says government is aware of the plight of the families in need of decent shelter.

Mrs Lungu has also applauded government for its affirmative action in issuing title deeds to the people living in unplanned settlements.

Speaking at the same event, Habitat for Humanity National Director Kanyata Mukelebai says lack of housing and land for women means increased vulnerability to poverty, social instability, disease and economic distress.

And two women who are among the beneficiaries of the houses have expressed happiness over the houses being constructed for them.
