DEGHA Predicts Fierce Competition For Parliamentary Seats In Kitwe Next Year

By Michael Kaluba

The Democratic Governance and Human Rights Advocates -DEGHA- on the Copperbelt has predicted that there will be more independent parliamentary candidates in Kitwe due to the high number of individuals vying for each seat on the ruling Patriotic Front PF ticket.

DEGHA National Coordinator Gerald Mutelo tells Phoenix News that the high number of aspiring candidates from the ruling party in certain constituencies in Kitwe wishing to challenge incumbent members of parliament can be attributed to possible underperformance by the sitting MP’s and the need for the electorate to usher in a more effective representative.

Mr. Mutelo is of the view that there will be a lot of split votes at parliamentary level in Kitwe especially if some candidates from both the ruling and opposition political parties who are preferred by the grassroots will be shunned in preference for those known by political party national hierarchy without consulting their district leaders.

Kitwe’s Kamfinsa Constituency is currently having a showdown in full blown campaigns by parliamentary hopefuls among them, Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe, Van Wyk Mumba and Kelvin Chipili, all of the PF, while incumbent Elalio Musonda wants to recontest his seat in 2021 and Nkana constituency also has two PF members, former Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu and former PF Rokana Ward Councilor Gift Kalumba who intends to challenge incumbent MP, Alexander Chiteme.
