Current African Migratory Locust Outbreak Threatening Livestock And National Food Security

By Logic Lukwanda

The government says the current outbreak of the African migratory locust is very serious and has the potential to spread to other parts of the country.

So far, the locusts are present in Western, Southern and Central provinces.

Giving an update at a media briefing on the extent of the outbreak this morning, Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo said crops and livestock are under threat, and so is the national food security.

Mr. Katambo, however, says there is hope of eradicating the locusts and that for today, no new reports of spread have been received adding that government will ensure the outbreak remains localized in affected areas.

He disclosed that 10,397 hectares have so far been covered under aerial spraying in affected areas and chemicals have proven to be very effective.

The Minister, however, noted that locusts’ migration from Namibia into Western Province are posing a new challenge as they are landing in some areas already sprayed.
