CSOs told to reclaim their Civic space

HRC Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya

The human rights commission has called on civil society organizations, media and faith based organizations to reclaim their civic space in the country.

Commission Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says it is not surprising to hear about the shrinking of political and civic space in Zambia.

Mr. Muleya has told q-news that while human rights and freedoms are  provided for, citizens need to be proactive and ensure that they are not deprived of their rights.

He says it is expected that civil society organization, media and faith based organizations will coordinate and do self introspections why they have been displaced in the country’s  democratic dispensation.

Mr. Muleya has emphasized the need for CSOs to have a coordinated struggle for them to have their space back stating that it will never be given on a silver platter.

He has encouraged them to explore strategies that can sustain their struggle and ensure that there is deepening democratic tenets amongst the masses by civic education so that the fight is wide spread.
