Controversy as suspect dies in police cells
POLICE in Lusaka are investigating circumstances under which a suspect on Saturday night died while in detention at George Compound police post.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed this in a statement and said the body of the deceased is in UTH mortuary awaiting postmortem.
She said Police had detained two police officers and two neighbourhood watch officers in connection with the death of a suspect who was in custody at George police post for Burglary.
Those arrested and detained are Constable Habatebele who was in charge of the shift, Reserve Constable Phiri and two neighbourhood watch officers identified as Joseph Banda aged 49 and Saulosi Phiri aged 35 all of George Compound police post.
The incident happened on Saturday around 07:00 hours at George Police while the suspect has been identified as Jimmy Sampa who was earlier picked for allegedly stealing a Radio and two speakers.
Meanwhile Katongo said a docket of case has been opened and investigations have continued.
