Conservationist Summoned Over Revelations Of Missing 80 Black Lechwes

By Logic Lukwanda

Police in Luapula Province have summoned conservationist Nsama Learns over her revelation that 80 black lechwes had gone missing in the Bangweulu wetlands.

Ms Learns is expected to appear before the Mansa Central Police this afternoon at 14:00 hrs.

The conservationist who at the time of the interview was travelling to Mansa for questioning by the police, has demanded that the Ministry of Tourism avails the ecological report to show that the black lechwes can survive in other parts of the country.

Ms Learns has told Phoenix News that the only suitable place in Zambia to sustain the life of the black Lechwe is the Bangweulu wetlands.

But Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary, Amos Malupenga in a separate interview with Phoenix News said the procedure to trans-locate the 80 black lechwes was followed and it has been proven that the animals can live in Langani and Witpen private game ranches were they have been taken in Chisamba and Kazungula respectively.

And Mr Malupenga has clarified that the two private game ranches have paid for the black Lechwes and the animals remain government trophy.
