Concerns have been raised by various stakeholders over the government’s decision to go ahead with the administering of the AstraZeneca vaccine despite reports of the drug having side effects as reported in other parts of the world.

UPND Vice President Mutale Nalumango is challenging the government to act responsibly and protect Zambian lives by not going ahead with the AstraZeneca vaccine programme.

Mrs. Nalumango tells Phoenix News that the party cannot stop people from accessing the vaccine but wants the government to be responsible and cautious in the manner the vaccine is been administered.

She has questioned the government’s move to accept the vaccine in the country whose administration in other countries has been stopped on suspicion that it causes blood clotting, Mrs. Nalumango adds that the country does not even have the capacity to retest the safety of the vaccine to prove if reports that it causes clotting are even true.

Meanwhile, a Pharmaceutical expert is shocked that despite the effects associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, the government has gone ahead to roll out the administration of the vaccine.

Jerome Kanyika says the recent African country to withdraw the use of the vaccine is Botswana as a result of the side effects associated with it such as rare blood clotting.

Mr. Kanyika has told Phoenix News that government should not take chances by going ahead with the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine which he fears might put millions of lives at risk.

The UK, Denmark and Brazil among other countries are reported to have a recorded number of deaths suspected to have been as a result of the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
