Catherine Phiri Game for April Fight

World Boxing Council WBC Gold Bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri says she is ready to take on former WBC Flyweight champion Marriana Suarez in the WBC Bantamweight championship fight slated for April 1.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with Daily Nation Sports in Lusaka, Catherine said she was eager to defend her WBC Gold Bantamweight title.

She said that she will be taking the fight very serious noting that her opponent is older and more experienced.

“I’m very eager for this fight. For the past two months I have been in camp preparing for the fight because I know that it is not going to be an easy fight, it’s going to be a tough fight because my opponent is a very good boxer and an experienced one too,” she said.

But despite facing an experienced boxer in her coming fight, the WBC Champion was confident of emerging victorious.

“I will have to defend my tittle in Mexico where I won it. It is going to be a tough fight because as you know, I will be facing an experienced boxer but I believe I will win the fight on April 1,” she said.

The world champion last defended her title against South African Boxer Gabisile Tshabalala who was her first challenger for the title last year.

And Catherine’s trainer Mike Zulu said he will do everything possible to ensure that Catherine and Charles Manyuchi defend their belts.

Manyunchi will on March 25 defend his World Boxing Council welterweight silver title against challenger Qudratilo Abduqaxorov of Singapore.

“We have been preparing for the last two months for the fights ahead and our goal is to defend the belts therefore we will do everything possible to ensure that we come out victorious,” Zulu said.
