Bowman Lusambo says negligence is at the heart of the water contamination in Lusaka
LUSAKA Province Minister Bowman Lusambo has directed Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to secure all water points in order to avoid contamination.
And Lusambo has directed the utility company to demolish all illegally built structures around water points.
Lusambo made these directives yesterday after undertaking a fact finding mission together with officials from Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company, WARMA, LCC and the Lusaka Provincial Medical Office, following some water contamination reports in selected parts of Lusaka.
“I have had to cut short my annual leave to attend to the urgent matter where thousands of Lusaka residents have been exposed to a case of water contamination resulting in over 400 people requiring medical attention,” Lusambo said.
He said after his fact finding mission it was clear that the contamination was due to negligence on the part of the water utility.
“The poor management of the water points by Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company resulted in the contamination of the borehole supplying the affected areas. Most of the water points in the city are unsecured increasing the risk of mass contamination and even sabotage by enemies of progress,” said Lusambo.
