12 Die During Farmers day Holiday, says Rae Hamoonga

A TOTAL of 224 Road Traffic Accidents have been throughout the country from 31st July to 2nd August 2016.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said in a statement released in Lusaka yesterday that during this year’s just ended Farmers Holiday period, 12 people died as compared to 218 accidents which were recorded last year with 28 deaths.

Hamoonga said the accidents record represents an increase of six accidents while the decrease in the number of deaths represents a 57 percent.

“During this year’s farmers day holiday, 12 fatal accidents were recorded in which 12 persons died, 26 were serious accidents with 42 people sustaining serious injuries while 73 persons sustained minor injuries in 56 accidents,” Hamoonga said.

Hamoonga said 130 accidents were only damages as no one was injured.

He said Lusaka province recorded 105 accidents of which five were fatal accidents with five people killed, seven serious accidents, 18 slight accidents, and 75 damage accidents only.

“Copperbelt province recorded second highest number of accidents with 27 accidents without any death recorded,” he said.

“Central province recorded 24 accidents with one death, while Southern province had 12 accidents with no death.”

Hamoonga also disclosed that Eastern province recorded 25 accidents with no death, and Western province had six accidents with no death as well.

“Northern province recorded five accidents with one death while Luapula had nine accidents with one death,” said Hamoonga.

He said North Western recorded nine accidents with two deaths, and Muchinga had two accidents with two deaths.
