ZNFU RING ALARM

By Brian Mwale:The Zambia National Farmers’ Union -ZNFU- says the continued importation of processed meats and meat products is hindering the growth of the country’s livestock sub-sector.The Union says this goes against the country’s resolve to protect domestic value chains against cheaply imported products.ZNFU President Jervis Zimba said in a statement to ZNBC news that it is saddening that various processed meats; such as polonies, bacon, smoked sausages and even fish, from as far as Portugal, Mexico and Brazil are finding their way in some multinational shopping outlets operating in Zambia.Mr. Zimba observes that continued imports of processed meats and meat products is promoting job creation in countries where the products are coming from in addition to aggravating further currency depreciation. He has since called for investigations into the matter and appealed to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to quickly arrest the situation before Zambia’s livestock sector is lost to unfair foreign competition.Efforts to get a comment from Livestock Minister Nkandu Luo proved futile as her phones are off.
