ZNFU rejects FRA’s maize purchase price of K110 per 50KgÂÂ
THE Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) says it is regrettable that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has gone ahead to announce the maize purchasing price of K110 per 50Kg bag of white maize against the agreed price range of between K130 and K140.
ZNFU Media and Communications Manager Calvin Kaleyi in a statement to Mwebantu said during the engagement with stakeholders, it was agreed that the maize buying price should be between K130 and K140 per 50Kg bag of white maize based on prevailing market price indications.
Kaleyi said the announced purchasing price is far below the current maize prices being offered in the main producing areas such as Central and Eastern Provinces.
He advised farmers to search for best prices in the possible prevailing areas where private buyers are paying spot cash bearing in mind the declined production forecast for maize.
“The Union recognizes that the cost of production has increased and continues to escalate while the asset base of farmers has been wiped out by the adverse weather pattern which has been prevailing season after season since 2015 and the hostile macroeconomic environment,†Kaleyi said.
