ZANASU engaging President Lungu over abolished meal allowance

Zambia National Students Union President Misheck Kakonde says his union is seeking an audience with President Edgar Lungu over the abolition of the meal allowance in public universities.

Mr Kakonde says there was therefore no truth in the claims by the Police that the students planned to stage a protest march to Parliament over the meal allowance.

He has told Q-news via telephone that ZANASU sees no need to protest when they are seeking an audience with the President over the same issue.

Mr Kakonde says if the students wanted to protest against the abolition of the meal allowance they would have gone to state house rather than go to parliament.

He has accused the Police of inciting violence and protests in the country with their misleading statements in the media.

Mr. Kakonde states that all the students are asking for is to be heard as the decision to scrap off the meal allowance is illegal.

Meanwhile University of Zambia Students Union President Warran Hamusanga says there is nothing wrong with the students having a peaceful demonstration as it is even provided for in the constitution as long as they inform the police.

Yesterday, Police warned the students against staging a protest at Parliament over the abolition of the meal allowance.

A check by Q-News outside Parliament buildings found Police officers had been deployed with no sight of the students.
