Zambia has completed the Earth Receiving Station, a pivotal development for the country’s first satellite launch, with an investment exceeding US$14 million.

Located in Chibombo District, this project highlights the government’s commitment to advancing space technology and satellite communication.

The station is set to impact several sectors. In agriculture, satellite data will provide insights into crop health, soil conditions, and weather patterns, helping farmers make informed decisions.

Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati remarked, “The station will enable us to monitor natural hazards like floods and droughts, enhancing our disaster management capabilities.”

It will also aid environmental monitoring by tracking deforestation, wildlife habitats, and resource management.

Mutati noted, “This development builds on achievements like the Zambian BRITE satellite project and positions Zambia to leverage future advancements in satellite communication.”

Currently, the facility is in the testing phase as preparations for the satellite launch continue.

According to Mutati, “This satellite is expected to boost agriculture, forestry, groundwater management, and weather forecasting, which are vital for addressing climate change.”

In agriculture, satellite technology supports precision farming and crop yield optimization. The Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI) uses satellite data for crop management and research.

In forestry, satellite imagery helps monitor forest cover and combat illegal logging, supporting conservation efforts. For groundwater management, satellite mapping is crucial for assessing water resources in arid regions.

The Zambia Meteorological Department too utilizes satellite data for accurate weather forecasting, aiding agricultural planning and disaster response.

Mutati also highlighted the impact of Wonderful Group of Companies’ US$1 billion investment in Lusaka, which has created significant job opportunities.

He stated, “This investment has generated jobs in construction and services, stimulated related industries, and boosted the local economy.”

The Wonderful Group’s investment aligns with Zambia’s strategy to attract foreign capital and drive sustainable development.

Mutati praised it as a “sign of effective government policies and a favorable business environment.”

Recent infrastructure projects, such as the Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway and the expansion of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, have improved logistics and connectivity.

Economic reforms and tax incentives have made Zambia more appealing to investors, with significant investments from companies like Coca-Cola and First Quantum Minerals.

Mutati encouraged Wonderful Group to collaborate on developing youth skills for the World Skills Africa Competition in Livingstone in April 2025, noting, “The competition offers Zambian youth a platform to showcase their talents internationally.”

Wonderful Group’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Roy Mwamba announced plans to hire 400 chemical engineers for new plants starting in 2026.

He said, “This plan aligns with the growing industrial sector in Zambia, which demands skilled professionals.”

Mwamba also discussed a potential partnership with Copperbelt University to train local engineers, aiming to reduce reliance on expatriates.

“This initiative is in line with national strategies to build a self-sufficient workforce,” he added.

The government’s focus on local talent development is reflected in partnerships between educational institutions and industries.

Successful industry-education collaborations, such as those between Zambian Breweries and the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants, show the benefits of such approaches.

By training local engineers, Wonderful Gllllroup contributes to this trend, ensuring Zambian professionals meet the expanding industrial sector’s needs.
