By Balewa Zyuulu

A Research Conducted by the Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute-IAPRI- has revealed that the food security situation in Zambia has deteriorated in 2019.

Presenting the findings on the latest food and nutrition indicators in Lusaka today, IAPRI research fellow Dr Rhoda Mukuka said when compared with other countries around the globe, Zambia still has a high prevalence of undernourishment currently standing at 46 percent.

Dr Mukuka says the findings entails that half the population of the country are under-malnourished.

Meanwhile, another IAPRI research fellow Dr Brian mulenga who also made a presentation on the current food security situation, says the badly hit areas with hunger include western and southern parts of the country.

Dr Mulenga is of the view that going forward, there is need to shift away from heavily depending on maize production as the mainstay for food but produce other crops that are drought resistant.
