Chinyama said the kits will enhance connectivity and empower communities across Zambia.

Lusaka, Zambia24 (29-02-2024) – The National Assembly has recently received Starlink Kits across all 156 Constituencies in Zambia, a donation from the Smart Zambia Institute (SZI).

Malunga A. Chisangano MP, the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, received the kits, emphasizing their alignment with the Assembly’s Digital Transformation Strategy and ICT Strategic Plan.

Chisangano said when she officially received the kits at Parliament that they aim to enhance connectivity and efficiency, crucial for applications like ‘My e-Parliament.’

Chisangano underscored the significance of internet access, particularly for constituents living farther away from Constituency Offices.

“The donation, a collaboration between the Government and SMART Zambia Institute, comes at a crucial time as the National Assembly seeks to bolster its ICT operations,” she said.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of internet access, especially evident during the Covid-19 pandemic, Chisangano expressed gratitude for the donation, foreseeing it as a catalyst for Zambia’s digital empowerment.

And Percy Chinyama, the National Coordinator for Smart Zambia Institute, highlighted the government’s commitment to digital transformation, emphasizing the distribution of educational tools for children as announced by the Minister of Science and Technology. He sees this initiative as revolutionary, particularly for underserved areas.

Chinyama reframed the initiative as an investment in the nation’s future, aiming to empower individuals for active participation in the digital economy.

He credited the Ministry of Finance for its crucial support in procuring educational devices, ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.

Moreover, Chinyama stressed the importance of cybersecurity measures and accessibility at constituency offices, ensuring the devices reach those in need.

According to Chinyama, the Minister assured users of stringent measures in place to safeguard their privacy and data.

He said this commitment to cybersecurity is vital in building trust and confidence among users, thereby encouraging greater adoption of digital technologies.

Moreover, Chinyama indicated, the provision of devices extends beyond mere distribution, with plans to ensure accessibility at constituency offices within a 50-meter radius.

He said this strategic approach aims to maximize the utility of the devices and ensure that they reach those who need them the most.

Meanwhile, Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati, who was represented by Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, outlined Zambia’s vision for harnessing technology to drive economic growth.

Musokotwane highlighted key initiatives aimed at leveraging technological advancements for the benefit of all Zambians.

He announced plans to increase funding for R&D initiatives across various sectors, fostering a culture of innovation and supporting homegrown solutions.

Musokotwane stressed the need to promote digital literacy and skills development among Zambians of all ages.

He announced the rollout of programs aimed at providing training and resources to enhance digital literacy, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

He said the government is committed to improving connectivity and infrastructure to support the adoption of digital technologies.

“Plans include investment in broadband networks, digital infrastructure, and smart technologies in urban centers to unlock new opportunities for economic growth,” he said.

He said efforts to promote entrepreneurship and innovation include supporting startups and SMEs in the technology sector.

He said plans for innovation hubs, incubators, and funding programs aim to nurture promising startups and facilitate their growth, driving economic diversification.

“Greater collaboration with the private sector, academia, and international organizations is essential for driving technological innovation,” he stated.
