Zambia’s Copper Production Drops In First Half Of 2021

By Michael Kaluba

Zambia’s copper production has reduced by about 4 percent in the first 6 months of 2021 translating into a drop of a total of 14,692.81 tons.

According to the Chamber of Mines, Zambia only produced a total of 393,114.89 tons as of June this year compared to 407,807.7 tons at the same stage of the year in 2020 representing a drop of 4 percent.

And the Chamber of Mines says the continued delays and limited feedback regarding the cost-of-service study process have continued causing uncertainty on electricity tariffs for the mines which remains a key risk for the mining sector and industry in general.

In response to a press query, Chamber of Mines President Godwin Beene states that the delay is especially concerning at a time when the mining sector is preparing to mobilize funds from global financiers for capital expenditure.

He says there is a need for Zambia to urgently address the said risk and resolve it for enhanced production and to lower the cost of capital as soon as possible for the sector.
