MARTHA Phiri is a 39-year-old Councilor for Mkaika Ward in Katete District. She is the only woman out of a total of 20 councilors. She is currently serving as the Deputy Council chairperson for Katete Town Council.
Her political journey has been greatly enhanced by a project implemented by the Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) called “Empowering Women in Politics for enhanced Leadership and participation in decision making processes”. The project was funded by UKAid through the British Council under the Zambia Accountability Programme.
“I am in this role today partly because of the help from Zambia National Women’s Lobby,” She says. Martha received training to develop her communication and lobbying skills, and to put together a work plan to better respond to the needs of the community. She used a platform on radio Mhango facilitated by ZNWL to reach out to the electorate.
Martha has since applied her lobbying skills to source funding from a family visiting Zambia and from the Muslim Association to drill 9 boreholes in the community. She also secured more than half of the community development fund to electrify Chisale Day Secondary school which was founded in 1947, and had been without electricity ever since. The electrification is expected to cost over seven hundred thousand kwacha and will be completed by the end of October 2019.
