ZAMBIAN WOMAN JAILED IN ETHIOPIA

 

A 46-year old Zambian woman has been sentenced to five years imprisonment in Ethiopia for drug trafficking.

PENELOPE MUNGE of Ndola was sentenced on Tuesday for possession of 2.2 kilograms of Cocaine, which was inserted in her private part and some implanted in her body.

Charge D’ Affaires at the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia TREVOR SICHOMBO has confirmed the development saying Ms. MUNGE was arrested on April 11 this year, at Bole International Airport, while in transit to South Africa.

Mr. SICHOMBO says Ms. MUNGE collected the drugs from a man in Addis Ababa, for delivery to a Mr. DOUGLAS in South Africa.

In her Mitigation, Ms. MUNGE pleaded for leniency saying she was a first offender and had responsibilities of taking care of her children being a divorcee.

Ms. MUNGE further stated that she was Hypertensive and needed consistent medical attention.

The Ethiopian High Court in passing Judgment observed that cases of drug trafficking have become common and are posing a danger to society hence the need to impose custodial sentence on offenders as a deterrence to others.
