… As the ICAO Audit Approaches, Zambia Highlights Major Investments and Collaborations

By Francis Maingaila

Lusaka, Zambia24 – (21-08-2024) — Zambia is making notable strides in its aviation sector as it prepares for an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audit.

Fredrick Mwalusaka, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, addressed the ICAO auditors today, highlighting Zambia’s ambition to become a regional transport hub.

Mwalusaka reported that the Zambian government has invested over USD 1 billion in upgrading major international and provincial airports, including Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) in Lusaka, as well as airports in Ndola, Livingstone, Mbala, and Kasama.

He also noted significant enhancements at the Zambia Air Services Training Institute (ZASTI). “These investments are critical to strengthening our regional training capabilities and improving our aviation infrastructure,” Mwalusaka said.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has expanded its workforce and updated its regulatory frameworks, including amendments to major civil aviation laws and the introduction of new regulations. “We are committed to enhancing safety and operational standards across our aviation sector,” Mwalusaka stated.

Mwalusaka explained that Zambia has engaged with international aviation bodies, including the Southern African Development Community Aviation Safety Organisation (SASO), the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), and the European Union Safety Agency (EASA). “Collaborating with these organizations is key to advancing our aviation capabilities,” he noted.

Passenger growth has been substantial, with 2 million passengers recorded in 2023 and over 1 million in the first half of 2024. Mwalusaka attributed this growth to improvements in Zambia’s aviation infrastructure and services.

He assured the ICAO auditors of the Zambian government’s support and expressed optimism for a favorable audit outcome. “We are confident in the progress we’ve made and welcome any feedback to help us further improve,” Mwalusaka said.

Mwalusaka reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to its aviation sector and thanked the ICAO team for their evaluation. “We appreciate your visit and look forward to your insights,” he concluded.
