Zambia seeks greater Soyabeans production

(NAIS) Agriculture Minister, RUEBEN MTOLO says soya beans production presents significant opportunities for African farmers, whose climate and vast arable land favour cultivation.

Mr MTOLO said this at the launch of a partnership between the Strengthening Soya bean Improvement for Africa and the consultative group of the international Agriculture Research Public Private Partnership Project.

The partnership is meant to accelerate the development of climate smart soybean varieties in Africa.

Mr MTOLO said the collaboration between international organisations, the private sector and the government is important to address the challenges and improve agriculture.

This was in a speech read on his behalf by the Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary Administration, YVONNE MPUNDU.

And Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Senior Programme Officer, JEFF EHLERS said the partnership will bring together national programs that will be working on soybean in west, east and southern Africa.

Meanwhile, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture Soybean Breeder, GODFREY CHIGEZA said soybean production in Africa is increasing.

Mr CHIGEZA said the institute is working on solutions to fight hunger and poverty in Africa and beyond.
