Lusaka, Zambia24 (04-03-2024) – The Road Safety and Transport Agency (RTSA) has relaunched fleet safety management, emphasizing the urgent need to reduce road fatalities caused by driver miscalculations.

Allen Mate, Board Chairperson, stresses the importance of defensive driving training to mitigate accidents, noting that driver error is a significant factor in many incidents.

Mate highlights the adoption of fleet safety management, structured around five key components, as crucial for effectively addressing road safety challenges.

RTSA is proactively establishing a dedicated unit and collaborating with relevant institutions to strengthen implementation.

“Public awareness and commitment from stakeholders are crucial for the success of road safety initiatives,” Mate adds, regretting the alarming statistics on road accidents and fatalities, emphasizing the need for enhanced measures.

Frank Tayali, speaking at the occasion, underscores the purpose of the Fleet Safety Management Policy (FSMP) in tackling Zambia’s high rate of road accidents, largely attributed to human errors.

Under government auspices, RTSA has undertaken legislative measures and infrastructure improvements to reduce fatalities and injuries.

Tayali explains that various statutory instruments, including commercial standards, aim to influence behavior and enhance fleet safety management.

He notes that compliance with the FSMP, including the utilization of GPS management systems and monitoring drivers’ behavior, is integral to achieving road safety goals.

To ensure compliance, Tayali announces that all commercial bus operators must develop and implement fleet safety management policies within six months.

He emphasizes the government’s commitment to collaborating with operators to protect road users, improve the transport industry, and provide economic benefits.
