Lusaka, Zambia24 – (17-07-2024) – The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) is hosting the 26th Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) Conference in Livingstone from August 11 to 15, 2024. This marks the first time Zambia will host the prestigious event in 28 years.

HPCZ Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Fastone Goma, announced that the council is committed to making the 2024 conference inclusive and impactful.

He expressed gratitude to the media for their ongoing support in promoting healthcare standards and announced that the conference will host 199 delegates from different parts of Africa and over 200 local delegates.

Prof. Goma highlighted the significant growth of AMCOA, which now includes regulatory authorities from over 35 member states and more than 10 affiliate members.

He noted that the association plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of medical education, registration, and regulation to protect public interest.

The 2024 conference is themed “Regulation in the Era of Artificial Intelligence” and aims to address the evolving landscape of healthcare regulation and service delivery.

Prof. Goma emphasized the importance of this theme for Zambia and Africa, particularly in building stronger and more resilient health systems.

He outlined several key impacts of AI on the operations of HPCZ and other medical regulatory authorities, including real-time updates on compliance checks, efficient review and processing of regulatory documents, and enhanced patient safety.

However, Prof. Goma also acknowledged the challenges posed by integrating AI into existing regulatory frameworks, emphasizing the need for collaboration to address ethical concerns, data privacy, and the need for new skills and training for health professionals.

The conference will feature a lineup of notable keynote speakers, including Mr. Choolwe Andrew Nalubamba, Dr. Lesa Wright, Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, and Ms. Mara Zhanet Michelo who will provide invaluable insights on the future of healthcare regulation in the era of AI.
