ZAMBIA HAS ADEQUATE ONIONS, POTATOES-ZNFU

By Mweene Muleza-

Onion and Potato value chain stakeholders have resolved that Zambia does not need to import potatoes and onions as it has adequate stock.

Zambia National Farmers Union -ZNFU- President JERVIS ZIMBA says the stakeholders have also resolved that there will not be need to import onions or frozen onion related products in the country as it has enough stocks.

Mr. ZIMBA says importers of Potato Crisps will be referred to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry for further advice as stakeholders are only in support of measures that will lead to increased production of potatoes locally and value addition.

He says there is no need for importation of frozen chips.

In a statement to ZNBC News, Mr. ZIMBA said stakeholders have agreed to be in constant consultation to avail updates on commodity availability and measures to be taken.

The resolutions were made following a protracted meeting by onion and potato stakeholders, including traders, processors and producers organized by ZNFU at its Secretariat.
