Zambia experiencing low antibiotic effectiveness

Government is concerned with the misuse of drugs which has led to drug resistance.

Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO says there is low antibiotic effectiveness and this poses a threat to effective disease management.

Ms. MASEBO says data from both human and veterinary health shows the alarming rates of drug resistance in different hospitals and in food-producing animals.

The minister was speaking during the commemoration of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.

And Zambia National Public Health Institute Director ROMA CHILENGI said misuse of drugs does not only lead to resistance but death also.

Meanwhile, Zambia Medicines Regulatory Agency -ZAMRA- Acting Director General  SINYANGA MAKOMANI said people should stop self prescribing drugs.
