Zambia commemorates African Freedom Day

Zambia has today Wednesday the 25th of May joined the rest of Africa in commemorating African Freedom Day which falls on this day annually.

This year’s Africa Freedom Day is being commemorated under the theme “celebrating the role of women in the liberation struggles”.

And President Edgar Lungu this morning led defense chiefs and foreign dignitaries in laying wreaths at the freedom statue in Lusaka in

Amongst the honor of fallen heroes that fought for liberation of Africa.notable people that attend the wreath laying ceremony include vice president Inonge Wina and Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini.

President Lungu has hosted a special African Freedom Day state reception at state House.

And last night in his African Freedom Day Eve address to the nation President Lungu stressed the importance of the Country and the rest of Africa to commemorate African Freedom Day.

President Lungu says African Freedom Day gives both Zambia and the rest of the continent an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by its founding fathers and mothers.

He notes that as Country heads towards the general elections in August this year,  his party the ruling PF has taken the lead in addressing the effective participation of women in politics.

President Lungu has urged opposition parties to emulate what the ruling PF has done to reserve 40 percent of all elective positions in local government and parliamentary elections to the women.

He states that the ruling PF is proud to have for the first time in the Country’s history a woman appointed to the second highest position in the land.
