WORLD FOOD DAY

By Nicholas Mwale:

Agriculture Minister Reuben Phiri says the new dawn government is determined to invest in the agricultural sector.

Mr. Phiri says the agricultural sector is currently characterized with low productivity levels, insufficient infrastructure support, inadequate delivery of extension services, limited irrigation and mechanization among others.

Mr. Phiri says investing in agriculture to address these challenges guarantees significant improvement in the lives of the majority of the people, and means fighting hunger and poverty in the country.

He says government will implement the comprehensive agricultural transformation programme aimed at tackling and eradicating hunger.

Mr. Phiri said this in a speech read for him by Director of Agriculture Moses Mwale during the commemoration of the 2021 World Food Day in Chongwe District under the theme, ‘Our actions are our future: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a better life.’

And the United Nations Resident Coordinator Coumba Mar Gadio assured government of continued support towards the fight against hunger through various interventions undertaken by respective UN agencies.

Dr. Mar Gadio said innovative technologies and training, finances, incentives and social protection can help farmers to provide sustainable healthy diets.
