WORLD BANK GIVES ZAMBIA $26.5M FOR RURAL ELECTRIFICATION

The World Bank has approved a credit facility of 26.5 million United States Dollars for the Electricity Services Access Project ESAP.
Energy Minister Matthew Nkhuwa says the funds will be used to scale up the Rural Electrification program in various Provinces.
Mr. Nkhuwa said the ESAP’s objective is to increase electricity access in targeted rural areas of the country.
He said the project will provide last mile connections to the national grid to about 22,000 low income households and about one thousand medium and small-scale enterprises in rural areas.
Mr. Nkhuwa was speaking when he officiated at the launch of the Electricity Services Access Project in Lusaka today.
Meanwhile, World Bank Country Manager Ina Ruthenburg has pledged the Bank’s support to projects aimed at improving the livelihood of people in rural areas.
Ms. Ruthenburg said the Zambian Government has showed its commitment to supporting the under privileged in society.
And Rural Electrification Authority -REA- Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Musonda said the funds will sustain REA’s efforts of accelerating electricity in rural areas.
And ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mundende said the power utility company is equal to the task of supplying power to the rural areas.
