The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit –DMMU-has assessed and started working on five bridges that were washed away by heavy rains in Gwembe District of Southern Province.

This follows a trail of damage left by heavy downpours in various parts of the country.

And chief Chipepo of Gwembe confirmed to Phoenix News that the DMMU team has started erecting temporal bridges to ensure connectivity by the local people.

Meanwhile, the traditional leader says the hunger situation is still rife while some farmers that planted their maize along the banks of rivers and streams have had their crops destroyed.

On Wednesday last week, Gwembe Council Chairperson, Paul Chilala revealed that five important bridges connecting southern province’s Gwembe District to the rest of the country have been flooded following heavy rains.
