Wetlands loss worries govt

Land and Natural Resources Minister, ELIJAH MUCHIMA, says government has put in place measures to stop unsustainable practices that are depleting natural resources countrywide.

Dr. MUCHIMA says Zambia is losing wetlands three times faster than the rate at which forests are depleting at 75-thousand hectares per year.

He adds that the government is now moving swiftly to stop the tide.

The Minister said this when he officially launched the Early Action Support -EAS- project for the conservation of the Lukanga swamps in Chibombo district.

Dr. MUCHIMA said government will work with stakeholders countrywide to take stock of the country’s natural resources and put in place measures to stop unsustainable human practices that are destroying the country’s biodiversity.

Meanwhile Food and Agriculture Organisation -FAO- country representative SUZE FILIPPINE pledged its support to governments efforts aimed at arresting the degradation of the environment for sustainable food production.

The Early Action Support Project is aimed at streamlining efforts to protect natural resources and wetlands from degradation.

Government has received over 2-hundred and 50-thousand dollars financial support from the Global Environment Facility to assess and align the country’s national policies and institutional framework on biodiversity.
