WAH KONG CONSTRUCTION GIVEN DEADLINE TO DRAFT WORKER CONTRACTS

By Lufola Muzungu

The Ministry of Labour has given a 2-weeks ultimatum to WAH KONG Construction, to ensure it draws up contracts for its employees.

This comes after employees at the company, which is constructing the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Children’s Hospital in Lusaka, stopped working, in protest over poor working conditions.

The workers, whose protest started on Monday this week, were demanding for a salary increment, as well as contracts.

Lusaka Province Assistant Labour Commissioner, ELLEN MOYO says the company has been given the ultimatum, after a meeting with management and the workers representatives.

Ms MOYO says management has also agreed to give the employees a pay rise from 45 kwacha to 65 kwacha per day, according to the minimum wage laws.

Meanwhile, work has resumed at the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Children’s Hospital construction site.
